Our History
The Club's formative first meeting was in late November 1987. There were 33 charter members, who formed the club for the express purpose of providing sailing instruction to the community. The first classes were held in 1988. The Club teamed up with the Feather River Recreation and Park District (FRRPD) and taught over 500 students to sail in the first decade. The partnership with FRRPD continues to this day. In 1994 the BSC was appointed a permanent member of the Oroville Recreation Advisory Committee (ORAC). The ORAC was established by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to review and provide recommendations regarding the CA Department Water Resources’ Recreation Plan for Lake Oroville State Recreation Area. BSC still has a seat on the ORAC. The committee oversees the recreation upgrades to the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area, which included building of the first Aquatic Center in 1985.

Feather River Center
In 2017, four cooperating recreation groups banded together, tentatively at first, in an attempt to unify outdoor education and recreational activities at the Forebay Aquatic Center. The Butte Sailing Club, Table Mountain Rowing Club, Chico State Rowing Club, and Outdoor Education for All! became the Feather River Center (FRC), a new voice for education, recreation, competitive water sports, boating and water safety, and tourism for Oroville. Visit the Feather River Center webpage (https://www.featherrivercenter.org/) to find out about development for the future and activities.

About the Thermalito Forebay
Constructed between 1965 and 1968, Thermalito Forebay (The Forebay) is an offstream reservoir contained by Thermalito Forebay Dam on the south and east and by Campbell Hills on the north and west. Located about four miles north west of the city of Oroville, the Forebay conveys generating and pumping flows between Thermalito Power Canal and Thermalito Powerplant. This body of water provides regulatory storage and surge damping for the Hyatt-Thermalito power complex, and serves as a popular recreational site. The Forebay has a maximum operating storage of 11,770 acre-feet.
